Artemise, Cuba/Smithers, BC
Alex Cuba launched his music career as a child, performing in his father’s band Lost Puentes in Havana and winning a national songwriting competition at age eighteen. Resettling in Northern British Columbia in 1999, Cuba has since toured his tenacious trio around the world, releasing four albums and earning eighteen awards and nominations, including two Junos and three Latin Grammys. His groove-laden, multi-culti sound is characterized by smoky vocals, harmonies and adept guitar work with magnetic hooks; tunes that marry the rolling sway of Afro-Latin rhythms and the bittersweet melodies of his native home with jazz, for a new Latin soul sound. His latest album, Healer, includes bilingual duets with Ron Sexsmith, David Myles and Alejandra Ribera, while Cuba has also collaborated with Nelly Furtado, Feist and Jose Gonzalez. Always finding a silver lining in melancholy of any form, Alex Cuba’s sweet melodies, irresistible rhythms and electric punctuation are a welcome addition to our twenty seventh edition!
