Gypsophilia
Halifax, NS | Gypsy Jazz, World
ECMA-nominated band Gypsophilia is a true original with a sound that straddles jazz and world music, mixing gypsy jazz, funk, classical, world and bebop. Described by the BBC as “blurring the lines between Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz on the one hand and indie music on the other,” their unique sound is produced with a fittingly eclectic assortment of instruments, including three guitars, violin, double bass, trumpet and piano, bolstered by synthesizer, backbeat handclaps, impromptu gang vocals, percussion, and slide whistle. Their 2009 album Sa-ba-da-OW! went to the top of college radio jazz/blues charts and won an the band their first ECMA. Halifax Magazine has described this near-indefinable group simply as “hot”, saying “word of mouth is spreading like spilled whisky on a speakeasy floor.” Gypsophilia will bring their one-of-a-kind act to the centre of the Festival in the atmospheric Wilmot United Church.
